Now it’s time for the famous vitamin C to take a step back. Not only because of its alphabetical order, but also because of the incredible properties of the B vitamin.
As we constantly strive for better and more radiant skin, we’ve known about the outstanding benefits of vitamins A and C for some time. These are familiar to most skincare enthusiasts and have become an integral part of our daily routine. But in the last few years, a new star has emerged in the skincare firmament. After all, the beauty industry is constantly seeking better and more effective vitamins. Research on niacinamide in skincare unanimously demonstrates how special this active ingredient is. Combined with some other great ingredients like retinol and vitamin C, niacinamide truly stands out. Its versatility and exceptionally good tolerability make it so multifunctional. It can be used for almost any skin problem and any skin type and is an essential part of a modern, effective skincare routine.
What is Vitamin B3 – Niacinamide?
Its benefits are very similar to those of retinol. It strengthens the skin barrier, but without sensitivity or irritation from the start. It boosts cellular energy and has a skin-brightening effect. Niacinamide nourishes the skin while soothing redness caused by inflammation. It also acts as an antioxidant, limiting free radical damage. Furthermore, it promotes hydration by preventing transepidermal water loss. It does this by stimulating the natural production of skin-strengthening ceramides. A deficiency in ceramides makes the skin vulnerable and can cause all kinds of skin problems, such as dry, flaky, or (very) sensitive skin. Niacinamide thus enhances the ability of other moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, thus ensuring hydrated, plump skin.
Vitamin B3 for Better Functioning Skin
Niacinamide helps restore cellular energy, repair damaged DNA, and reduce sun-induced skin damage. To put it figuratively, vitamin B3 can be compared to a “well-oiled engine.” It combats internal and external stressors that can ultimately lead to the deterioration of our skin and premature aging, as well as hyperpigmentation and dehydration.
- Boosts collagen production
- Improves pigmentation and sun damage
- Strong antioxidant defense
- Enhances skin’s natural UV protection
- Refines pores
- Brightens dull skin
- Can reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles
What can vitamin B3 do?
Niacinamide has a positive effect on the skin’s appearance even in small amounts (1-5%). As with all active ingredients, it is recommended to start with low doses and then gradually increase the dosage. Niacinamide-experienced and more mature skin types can use serums with up to 10% niacinamide content. Because of its higher pH, it generally causes less irritation. However, it should not be used immediately with vitamin C. The acidic pH in certain vitamin C serums can greatly enhance its effects and convert it to niacin (nicotinic acid), which can temporarily cause redness in particularly sensitive skin.
How to use it best
The key to maximizing the benefits of vitamin B3 lies in making smart choices throughout your beauty routine. While niacinamide is an impressive ingredient, it’s not the only one your skin needs to feel and look its best. It works very well in the evening with retinol. A toner containing niacinamide also has a soothing effect directly after a stronger fruit acid peel and prevents dry, irritated skin after peeling. It’s also particularly effective in combination with a moisturizing (hyaluronic) serum, as it improves its absorption. It’s therefore quite multifunctional and can be used in a variety of ways, both morning and evening.
I recommend that my sensitive clients with skin concerns like rosacea, acne, or eczema start with a light formulation in a toner. This is a good option and the easiest to incorporate into a routine. This way, you can see how your skin reacts and adapts. And if you’re satisfied with the results, you can switch to a serum with a higher percentage to reap even more of the benefits. For example, if your skin barrier is weakened due to extreme weather fluctuations or wearing a mask, I often recommend a stronger dosage as a course of treatments such as serums, active ingredient ampoules, or targeted treatments.
Niacinamide is a versatile product with versatile benefits for the skin and virtually no side effects. Therefore, it should be part of every skincare routine.
